'Information about Something' or 'Information of Something'? Which One Is Correct? | Mastering Grammar

Information about Something or Information of Something: Which One Is Correct?

If you have ever written or said 'information of the event' or 'information of the new policy', you are not alone. This is a common preposition error among English learners.

In English, we do not use the preposition of to introduce the topic that the information describes:

This leaflet contains information of the museum.

I need some information of train times.

Instead, we use other prepositions to do the job. The most common and natural choices are:

  • about
  • on
  • regarding
  • concerning

When to Use Each Preposition

1. About – the everyday choice

About is the safest and most versatile preposition. You can use it in almost any situation: spoken or written, formal or informal.

Examples:

Do you have any information about the music competition?

✅ Could you give me some information about your grammar course?

✅ The website has lots of useful information about exchange programmes offered by universities around the world.

✅ We need more information about the cost before we decide whether to go on the trip.

2. On – slightly more formal

On is very similar to about, but it is often perceived as slightly more formal.

Examples:

✅ This book contains a lot of valuable information on Chinese history.

✅ Please provide information on your previous work experience.

✅ This leaflet contains information on how to recycle electronic waste.

✅ I found some useful information on nutrition and healthy eating.

3. Regarding – formal, often used in business or official writing

Regarding is more formal than about or on. You will see it in emails, letters, reports, and official forms. It means 'concerning' or 'with reference to'.

Examples:

✅ I am writing to request information regarding your summer internship programme.

✅ Do you have any information regarding flight delays?

✅ We have received no official information regarding the change of venue.

✅ Please ask the receptionist for information regarding visiting hours.

4. Concerning – similar to regarding, also formal

As a preposition, concerning is a synonym of regarding. It is equally formal and commonly used in written English.

Examples:

✅ The government has released new information concerning tax rates.

✅ Information concerning passport renewal can be found on this website.

✅ There is conflicting information concerning the safety of this product.

✅ She gave a presentation containing information concerning the company's future plans.

What about information of?

The only time information of is correct is when of belongs to a different structure.

Examples:

✅ He gave me a piece of information of great value. (Here, of great value describes the information itself, not what the information is about.)

Please ensure that you submit information of the type requested to facilitate a quick response. (Similar to the above, of the type requested describes the information itself, not what the information pertains to.)

If your intended meaning is 'information that tells you something about a topic', avoid of completely.
